DAYTON KY
Mar. 3 2024
It's a real barrel of toilets when new roads are built, and this outing focused on a new stretch that had recently opened.
And here we are. The new road I'm talking about - part of Berry Avenue - comes off on the right. We're looking northeast on Manhattan Boulevard where it rises onto the floodwall.
Looking down the new stretch of Berry, which opened in December 2023. The new stretch ends at 2nd, the first intersection ahead. It was built over a flat, dead-end stub of Berry. So Berry is buried! You can see Berry ending at 8th in the distance. Very old maps indicate Berry once continued further. In fact, as of 2024, the public right-of-way still continues to Brooklyn Avenue, and old aerial photos seem to show a footbridge over the railroad.
Looking back at the new part of Berry.
Southwest from Berry on the alley - a people's road - between 4th and 5th. As with another alley I inspected in 2019, this alley is especially peopley.
Berry at 5th. When this stop sign says stop, man, does it ever mean stop! Otherwise, it wouldn't be a stop sign.
Fifth at Dayton Avenue. This is Dayton ungentrified - the way a city should be. Straight ahead is an old, faded sign prohibiting trucks. This probably came in handy against the construction trucks for the gentrification boondoggle down the street.
McKinney at 4th. This stop sign doesn't give us a choice like the last one did! Of interest here though is the ONE WAY sign. It's ooollllld! In the background, you can see McKinney up to where a gap in the street starts, but old maps show the street used to go straight through.
The other way on McKinney. This ONE WAY sign uses the standard font - not the signature old Dayton font like the last one - but it's old too. In the background, some high-rise luxury condos in Cincinnati are trying to look down on this ungentrified, working-class block of Dayton. But we commoners take a licking and keep on ticking!
