PART 3

Crossing into Fairlee, Vt., on the Samuel Morey Memorial Bridge.

Looking up the White River from I-91 in White River Junction.

I-91 crosses the White River.

VT 11 in Springfield.

VT 11 uses Main Street in Springfield, home of the Springfield Telescope Makers. The town was also selected to host the premiere of The Simpsons Movie.

Elm Hill Street ascends the hill ahead, as a burly lumberjack strolls beside it.

VT 11 follows the Black River. The building to the left of the river seems to be some sort of school.

The old and new Vermont route shields stand face to face in Chester. The old shield was a circle; the new is the green marker like the VT 11 sign seen here.

US 7 near Manchester. Though only 2 lanes, this is essentially a freeway, with exit ramps and such. This isn't too far from Rutland, where I noticed someone spit hash browns all over a toilet seat at a Denny's during the Magical Mystery Tour of 2005.

Ramp from US 7 to VT 279, another undivided freeway. The obelisk at center is the Bennington Battle Monument.

VT 279 returns us to New York state!

NY 7 uses this causeway at Tomhannock Reservoir.

NY 7 uses Hoosick Street in Troy. This is where some woman who drove past bubbled.

NY 7 has a somewhat elaborate layout as it feeds into the Collar City Bridge. The bridge is a divided highway, but Hoosick ramps down from the split here.

You can see Hoosick ramping down straight ahead.

A view of Troy from the Collar City Bridge. The biggest city in the area is Albany, but traffic was bad enough in Troy, so we knew better than to go through Albany.

Another view of Troy.

The Collar City Bridge crosses the Hudson River and opened in 1981. In addition to NY 7, the bridge may also have I-787, though this is unclear.

A broader view of Troy, population 50,000. The city's motto is "Ilium was, Troy is." I have no idea what that means.

NY 7 forms a freeway and approaches I-87, which goes to Glens Falls, birthplace of Rachael Ray, who doesn't know how to bubble.

As in Massachusetts on the way up, US 20 comes in handy for avoiding a toll stretch of I-90. One of the rail bridges seen here actually crosses right over the other.

Schoharie Creek from I-88. You can barely see the NY 30A bridge.

I-88 follows the Chenango River near Chenango Bridge.

I-88 goes under this rail bridge. We didn't leave NY 7 in the dust, as NY 7 has joined I-88 after all these miles.
