PART 3
US 31 in Ferrysburg.
US 31 crosses the Grand River in Grand Haven.
Several signs labeled US 31 as a "Selective Enforcement Zone." That doesn't sound good. The sidewalk chalk bust was selective enforcement.
Looking west on Lake Michigan Drive near West Olive.
US 31/Biz I-196 goes under this rail bridge in Holland.
Merging into I-196 - the Gerald R. Ford Freeway.
West on US 20 near Michigan City, Ind.
Probably US 12.
US 12 in Beverly Shores. A Lake Michigan beach in Beverly Shores was ruined by wealthy beachfront residents dumping concrete chunks there. The totalitarianism of these zillionaires continued to hold back the town in the early 2020s.
Probably US 12 again.
US 12 goes under this road that extends north from IN 49 in Indiana Dunes National Park. Indiana Dunes became a national lakeshore in 1966 and a national park in 2019. The park extends 20 miles along Lake Michigan. The National Park Service initially opposed making it a national park, because national parks shouldn't include the state name.
US 12 - known as Dunes Highway here - goes under the path near Mineral Springs Road.
This mill has one of those things that flares off energy, thereby wosting it.
US 12 goes under IN 249, which has a freeway-style interchange with US 12 as it becomes a restricted road to the Port of Indiana - an industrial area full of steel mills founded in 1965. The Port of Indiana was actually constructed over dunes that made up part of the Indiana Dunes.
US 12 yet again!
West Beach Road at Indiana Dunes. One of the park's famous sand dunes is on the right.
Beaches are a bit like a people's road. This is West Beach, a part of the park. People swim at this beach in the summer.
From West Beach, you can see downtown Chicago from 30 miles away!
The road heading away from West Beach. The bridge is County Line Road. We enter the city of Gary when we go under that.
