NEW MEXICO trip
Oct. 12-19 2023
PART 8
We left off at White Sands National Park, where the sun beat down on the gypsum sand.
Dunes Drive guides us out of the park.
Back on US 70!
US 70 again!
A dentistry billboard with a guy with a missing tooth.
US 70 approaches the relief route in Alamogordo.
Approaching where we disembark the relief route.
North on US 54/70, which is east on both US 54 and 70, but is actually slightly west here. In other words, buy a road atlas.
US 54/70 again.
"Hooper! It's Hooper, Big Bird!"
US 70 on the way to Ruidoso, childhood home of the actor who played that ridiculous Doogie Howser character.
The beauty of US 70 was something to behold!
US 70 goes under this footbridge in Mescalero, on the Mescalero Apache reservation.
This photo looks like it's straight from a road atlas cover! So be careful with the Scotch tape!
The city we see here is Roswell, birthplace of John Denver. This is on US 70/380.
East on US 380 into Roswell.
Overlooking Roswell from the relief route.
Gee! Gum! This is US 70 at Gee Street in Elida. We're 20 miles from Floyd, a town where New Mexico officials launched a coup against the elected school board for disagreeing with them.
Welcome to Portales, home of 3 or 4 old grouches. Hey, that must be where Michelle Lujan Grisham's Cabinet is from!
Portales is the home of Eastern New Mexico University. Maybe this is where they keep their grouches.
US 70 runs northeast on 2nd in Portales.
US 70 veers left onto Chicago Avenue.
Drive with Ruan. Like how stuff gets Ruaned. This is US 70 in Clovis. Clovis is where I fell in a motel bathroom.
US 70 uses Prince Street in Clovis as it crosses this viaduct over some rail.
