PART 8

US 1 jumps from Elm Street to Main Street in Camden, Maine.

It's new, the shape of your body! It's blue, the feeling I've got! This is the Blue Bunker, which makes its debut at Camden Hills State Park. On my first night here, my peace was disrupted by someone in the distance retching for an hour.

From Camden Hills State Park, this is looking out over Camden. West Penobscot Bay dominates. The island would be Curtis Island.

We pan to the left to show Northeast Point.

Looking over the bay again, I think Lime Island is the small island at center, and Lasell Island is the bigger island to the right of it. A USGS map says the county line between these two islands is an "indefinite boundary." Ooh, spooky!

US 1 crosses the Passagassawakeag River in Belfast, and as you look down the river, you can see the old US 1 bridge, but here it's behind the railing.

US 1/ME 3 in Searsport.

US 1 goes under Church Street in Stockton Springs. An old map says Church Street was once US 1, while US 1 ahead was Alt US 1. US 1 swapped with Alt US 1 around 1950. In our US 1 racing game, folks would often use Alt US 1 to cheat.

US 1 goes under this rail bridge.

Continuing on US 1, the Penobscot Narrows Bridge appears. This 2,120-foot-long bridge over the Penobscot River opened in 2006. It replaced the Waldo-Hancock Bridge, a 1931 span. After the bridge's conception it took only 3½ years to complete it. The bridge also has the tallest public bridge observatory in the world.

Another view of the Penobscot Narrows Bridge.

US 1 makes a sweeping right turn to reach the bridge.

Getting on the bridge!

Looking down the Penobscot River.

Descending the span onto Verona Island.

Part of US 1's brief trek on Verona Island.

US 1 crosses a bridge over the Eastern Channel.

US 1 enters Bucksport via the bridge.

US 1 in Ellsworth.

US 1 winds downhill in Ellsworth.

Still on US 1, we cross the Union River.

US 1 is again Main Street in Ellsworth.

Hahaha, the teeth on that sign look like one of the Letter People! This is US 1 using High Street in Ellsworth.
