PITTSBURGH trip
Aug. 12-13 2024
PART 1

This was only my fourth time in Pittsburgh - ever. I spent much of this trip in nearby McKeesport - which was exciting in its own right. Pittsburgh was the home of Mister Rogers and George Benson, and it was near the top of the hopper to be visited.

Let's start in Zanesville, Ohio! We're in a construction quagmire on I-70 that had been going on since at least 2021. This is the Muskingum River. The bridge in front with the framework is for rail. Behind it is the famous Y-Bridge. The Y-Bridge has US 40 and is a 3-way span as part of it crosses the Licking River. It opened in 1984, replacing a 1902 bridge, which in turn replaced earlier Y-bridges.

OH 209 in Cambridge. Cambridge is the birthplace of John Glenn and JoBoxers vocalist Dig Wayne.

OH 209 tries to recreate the days of the Washed-Out Yellow Stop Sign.

Capture that Wheeling feeling on I-470! Here we're about to cross the Ohio River to West Virginia. The bridge is the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Bridge, completed in 1983.

Heading onto the bridge.

A wild, woolly West Virginia welcome at the end of the bridge.

Pursue your happiness by owning the posh crowd! I-70 enters Pennsylvania.

We exit I-70 onto Brownlee Road.

Northwest on Brownlee.

North on Church.

East on PA 136.

PA 43 is part of the Mon-Fayette Expressway, a mostly toll freeway that is slated to run from Morgantown, W.Va., all the way to Monroeville, Pa. There is a proposal to make it I-97, despite an existing I-97 in Maryland. Here we're on the Joe Montana Bridges, a viaduct over Mingo Creek and PA 88 that opened in 2002. Remember the time Joe Montana cried during a game?

The Mon-Fayette was only open to the PA 51 exit.

North on Payne Hill Road.

Life's a pain. But this is Payne Hill Road!

Northeast on Wall Road - as in Occupy Wall Road.

The split of Short Street and Clark Avenue as we enter Clairton.

North 6th in Clairton.

Sixth becomes Massachusetts Avenue.

Continuing on Massachusetts, but I don't think photos can really do it justice. This was like Dayton Pike in the 1970s.

Massachusetts hits Connecticut Avenue near its junction with PA 837.

PA 837 goes under this rail bridge.

Another rail bridge over PA 837. The bridge in the previous photo practically goes over this bridge, but we actually cross under it slightly after this bridge.

PA 837 goes under the W.D. Mansfield Memorial Bridge. Don't worry, we're gonna be on that bridge!
